Tick Control in Georgetown, Acton and the Escarpment
Halton Region Public Health treats all of Halton as an established blacklegged tick risk area. In Halton Hills its tick sampling has found blacklegged ticks in Hungry Hollow, the ravine that runs through Georgetown along Silver Creek, at the Limehouse and Silver Creek conservation areas, and at Rotary Park beside Fairy Lake in Acton. One tick from Silver Creek in 2024 and one from Rotary Park in 2025 tested positive for the bacteria that cause Lyme disease. Blacklegged ticks can be active on any day above freezing, with peaks in spring, early summer and fall. They do not jump or fly. They wait in tall grass, brush and leaf litter, including the strip where a lawn meets the woods. Halton advises clearing leaf litter, brush and weeds from the lawn edge and around stone walls and woodpiles, and mowing regularly. For yards backing onto the Credit River valley, Hungry Hollow or escarpment woods, we can also treat along that edge.
Keeping Mice Out of Town and Country Homes
Most of the land in Halton Hills lies outside Georgetown and Acton. In the 2021 census, the two cover about 34 of the town's 277 square kilometres, and much of the rest is farmland, hamlets, woods and conservation land. Health Canada notes that deer mice may move into buildings near fields and woodlands in the fall, and that mice can squeeze through a crack the size of a dime. Older homes are common too: about six in ten homes in Acton and four in ten in Georgetown were built before 1981. Whatever a home's age, the places to check are the same: foundation cracks, gaps around pipes, the bottoms of doors, and dryer, attic and soffit vents. Traps deal with the mice already inside. Sealing those gaps before October is what keeps the next ones out.
Cluster Flies on Homes Near Fields and Open Land
Cluster flies are the sluggish flies that turn up at windows on warm days, often in late winter and early spring. Health Canada explains that they are parasites of earthworms and do not breed, feed or lay eggs inside homes. When the days shorten in late summer and early fall, the adults look for winter shelter, and there tend to be more of them in houses surrounded by large lawns or backing onto open parks. They are drawn to the warm south and west walls of buildings, particularly in open, exposed spots, such as a house standing on its own among fields. They get in through the smallest cracks around door and window frames and other unsealed openings, then settle in wall voids and attics for the winter. Health Canada's advice is to caulk those cracks and treat the outside of window and door frames to keep them out, so the time to act is late summer or early fall, before they move in.
