How We Eliminate Fleas
Identify the Source
Fleas arrive from somewhere — a pet, wildlife in a crawl space or attic, or a previous occupant's animal. If the source is still active, treatment gets undone, so we establish it first.
Treat Where Larvae Live
Adult fleas on a pet are a fraction of the population. The eggs, larvae and pupae are in carpet pile, along baseboards, in upholstery and in pet bedding, and that is where treatment is directed.
Return for the Pupae
A follow-up is scheduled deliberately. Pupae are protected inside a cocoon and resist treatment, then emerge days later — the second visit is what catches them.
How to Identify Fleas
Fleas are tiny, dark, and fast-moving, most often first noticed as bites around the ankles or on pets that scratch persistently. Fine black specks ('flea dirt') in pet bedding or carpet, which turn reddish-brown when wet, confirm an active population.
Seasonal Behaviour in Ontario
Flea eggs, larvae, and pupae can persist in carpet and soft furnishings for months, with pupae capable of remaining dormant until triggered by vibration or warmth — which is why fleas often 'reappear' weeks after a pet returns from being away. A single female can lay dozens of eggs a day, so populations escalate quickly once established.
DIY or Call a Professional?
A single flea found on a pet after time outdoors doesn't necessarily mean an indoor infestation. Persistent bites, visible flea dirt, or a pet scratching continuously indicate fleas have established in carpets and furniture — because eggs and pupae resist surface treatments, a full home treatment coordinated with pet treatment is usually needed rather than treating the pet alone.

Flea Control — Questions We Get
Why did fleas reappear a week after treatment?
The pupal stage. Flea pupae are encased in a protective cocoon that most treatments cannot penetrate, and they can wait weeks before emerging, often triggered by vibration and warmth from people moving around. A re-emergence roughly a week or two later is expected, not a sign of failure, which is why the follow-up visit is part of the plan.
Do I need to treat my pet at the same time?
Yes, and it should be coordinated. Treating the property while an untreated animal continues shedding eggs into it means constant reinfestation. Your veterinarian handles the animal; we handle the environment. Doing both in the same window is what makes either one hold.
