WHAT TO LOOK FOR
Common GTA Wildlife, By Species
Raccoons
Raccoons are Ontario's most common urban wildlife intruder, and the GTA has some of the highest urban raccoon densities in North America. They favour attics and chimneys for denning, especially in late winter and early spring when females seek a sheltered spot to give birth. Heavy nighttime movement, scratching in the ceiling, and a strong odour from droppings are the most common signs.
Squirrels
Grey squirrels are active year-round and typically get in through a damaged vent, a gap where a tree branch overhangs the roofline, or worn fascia board. Entry is usually opportunistic rather than strictly seasonal, though activity peaks in fall as they cache food for winter.
Skunks
Skunks den under decks, sheds, and porches rather than inside the home itself, and their presence is usually obvious well before an inspection — the smell alone is often the first sign. They're generally non-aggressive unless cornered, but exclusion work has to confirm the den is empty before sealing it, since trapping a skunk under a structure creates a worse problem than the original one.
The Legal Side of Wildlife Removal in Ontario
Wildlife removal in Ontario is subject to real legal limits, not just best practice. Under the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act, several species — raccoons included — cannot simply be trapped and released anywhere a technician chooses; relocation distance and method are regulated, and improperly handled wildlife work creates liability for the property owner as well as welfare risk for the animal. It's one of the clearest reasons to use a licensed wildlife technician rather than a DIY trap-and-release approach — the legal framework exists specifically because unregulated relocation causes real harm.
