Mouse and Rat Control in Toronto Homes

A mouse can squeeze through a crack as small as a dime, so the ways into a Toronto house are rarely ones you notice: gaps around pipes and wires where they come through the foundation, worn door sweeps and unsealed vents. Expect them to try in the fall, when the nights turn cold. In condo and apartment buildings, units that share a wall, floor or ceiling with one that has mice are more likely to have them too, so bring the property manager in on it. Rats need a quarter-sized hole, and Norway rats dig burrows at ground level, in damp spots like crawl spaces and along the edges of buildings. The City of Toronto's Rat Response Plan notes that excavation and demolition can drive rats into nearby homes, and that rats can quickly come back to a property if the neighbours don't deal with them too, so on a street of semis or rowhouses it helps to talk to next door. Trapping clears the mice and rats already inside. Sealing the gaps, with steel wool packed around pipes before caulking and metal weather stripping under doors, is what stops the next ones.

Raccoons in Toronto Attics and Chimneys

Raccoons get into Toronto homes through uncapped chimneys, loose shingles and openings in roofs, eaves and attics, and into garages and sheds. They also hide under decks. Between March and July there may be babies, so the City of Toronto advises checking that every raccoon has moved out before any opening is closed off or a chimney is capped. Our raccoon removal is live trapping only, by a licensed trapper on our staff, and we check for young before a trap goes in. Each raccoon is released close to where it was caught, as Ontario's rules require. Once every raccoon is out, we seal the entry with gnaw-resistant material. The City also recommends heavy rustproof screening over open vents, a securely capped chimney, trimming branches that overhang the roof, and keeping the green bin in a garage or shed until close to collection time.

Ant Control in Toronto

With ants, the species decides the treatment. Carpenter ants are the large ones, either dark brownish-black all over or with a reddish-brown upper body. They dig galleries in damp or decaying wood rather than eating it, so the sign to look for is small piles of sawdust-like shavings pushed out of a hidden gallery. Outdoors they nest in dead trees, stumps and logs. Pavement ants are smaller, turn up in lawns, gardens and along pathways, and forage indoors along a consistent trail. Odorous house ants give off a coconut-like smell when crushed. Surface spray kills the foragers you can see and leaves the colony intact, so the same trail shows up again. Bait carried back to the nest is what ends it, as long as nothing is sprayed while the bait is out.

Wasp Nest Removal in Toronto

Wasp nests in Toronto are at their biggest in late summer and early fall. By then yellowjackets switch from protein to sweets, so they turn up at sweet drinks and uncovered garbage cans, and the workers can be quicker to defend a disturbed nest. They usually build out of sight, in an old animal burrow in the ground or inside a wall or ceiling, so what you notice is a line of wasps going in and out of one gap in the siding, soffit or brick. Leave that gap open: if it is blocked, the wasps may find their way into the house instead. Paper wasps hang an open, umbrella-shaped comb under eaves and on door frames, and bald-faced hornets hang a grey, egg-shaped paper nest from a branch that is easy to miss until the leaves drop. I rent in Toronto and my landlord isn't dealing with mice. What can I do?

Speak to your landlord or property manager first. That is the City of Toronto's advice for tenants in apartments and multi-unit buildings, and if the problem still isn't dealt with, call 311. In a rental building with three or more storeys and 10 or more units, the City's RentSafeTO rules require the landlord to take timely action to remove pests, using a pest control operator licensed by Ontario's environment ministry, and an area named in a pest complaint must be inspected within 72 hours. Units that share a wall, floor or ceiling with one that has mice are more likely to have them too, so bring the property manager in on it.

When does the City of Toronto help with a raccoon?

When a raccoon looks sick, injured or in distress, or you see very young raccoons: call 311. Toronto Animal Services staff aren't licensed trappers and don't provide traps, so a healthy raccoon in your attic, chimney or shed is up to the property owner, who can deal with it or hire a wildlife removal business.

Will the City of Toronto remove a wasp nest from a tree?

Only from a City-owned tree, such as a street tree or a tree in a park, and only if the nest threatens public safety. Call 311 to report it. The City's tree policy is to leave wasp nests in trees where it can, because many wasps prey on other insect pests, and a nest more than 3 m above the ground is usually not removed. For a nest on your own property, the City's advice is not to disturb it and to contact a professional.

Should I get rid of a bumble bee nest in my yard?

If it is out of the way, we recommend leaving it alone. Bumble bees are big and fuzzy, with yellow hair over much of the abdomen, and their nests are usually underground. Toronto was the first Bee City in Canada and is home to more than 360 species of bees. Three bumble bees, including the rusty-patched bumble bee, are listed as Endangered on Ontario's protected species list. For a honey bee swarm, skip the exterminator and contact the Ontario Beekeepers' Association, since a local beekeeper may take a swarm that is easy to reach at no charge.
