How to Identify Centipedes

Centipedes favour damp, dark areas like basements, crawl spaces, and bathrooms, and are most commonly seen at night. Indoor sightings often increase in fall as both centipedes and their insect prey seek shelter from dropping outdoor temperatures.

Are house centipedes harmful?
Not really. They can bite if handled, but it is uncommon and comparable to a bee sting rather than dangerous. They are actually predators of other household insects. Most people treat them because of how they look and move, which is a perfectly reasonable reason, but they are not a health threat.
Why do I only see them at night?
They are nocturnal hunters and spend daylight hours in cracks, wall voids and under stored items. Seeing them during the day usually means the population has grown enough that harbourage is crowded, or that something disturbed them. Either way it suggests more than the occasional wanderer.
