OUR APPROACH
How We Treat Mosquitoes
Step 1
Find Where They Breed and Rest
We walk the yard looking for water that has sat for more than a week, in buckets, planters, toys, pool covers and clogged eavestroughs, and for the dense, shady shrubs and dark, humid spots where adult mosquitoes rest.
Step 2
Treat the Resting Areas
A licensed exterminator applies a product with a Pest Control Products (PCP) number on its label to the shrubs, shaded plants and sheltered spots where mosquitoes land and rest, following the label directions. Ontario allows this under the public health and safety exception to its cosmetic pesticide ban, which names mosquitoes.
Step 3
Cut the Breeding Water
A mosquito can go from egg to adult in less than 10 days when the temperature is right, and Ontario's Ministry of Health calls removing standing water a relatively simple and effective way to manage young mosquitoes. We show you what to tip, drain or cover and how often. Treating ponds or other water that can't be drained is not part of this service: in Ontario it needs a water extermination licence and a permit from the province.
How to Identify Mosquitoes
Only female mosquitoes bite. Most feed between dusk and dawn, and the adults rest in dense shrubs and in dark, humid spots such as under patio furniture. Aedes vexans and Coquillettidia perturbans are two of the most common mosquitoes in Ontario, and Culex pipiens and Culex restuans are the main species in Ontario that may carry West Nile virus.
Seasonal Behaviour in Ontario
Health Canada says mosquitoes are common from May to September in most of Canada, and Public Health Ontario updates its mosquito data every week from May to October. When the temperature is right, one can go from egg to adult in less than 10 days, and Peel Public Health calls water that sits for more than 7 days an ideal breeding site. Toronto Public Health sets 22 traps each week from mid-June to mid-September to track mosquitoes that may carry West Nile virus.
DIY or Call a Professional?
Start with the water. Once a week, drain or dry off old tires, rain barrels, toys, flower pots and wading pools, keep the eavestroughs clear, and change the water in bird baths and pet dishes at least twice a week. Keep shrubs trimmed and clear of debris, since adult mosquitoes rest in dense shrubbery. Health Canada says bug zappers, coils and electronic repellers that give off a high-frequency sound don't reduce mosquito numbers. If the yard is still hard to use after that, a treatment of the resting areas is the next step.

COMMON QUESTIONS
Mosquito Control: Questions We Get
When should mosquito treatment start in Ontario?
Book it around mosquito season. Health Canada says mosquitoes are common from May to September in most of Canada, and Public Health Ontario updates its mosquito data every week from May to October. Toronto Public Health's traps run from mid-June to mid-September.
How much does mosquito control cost?
Call or send the quote form for a price. It depends on how you book it: one treatment, a seasonal program, or as part of Platinum Protection. The quote is free, and there's no binding contract.
Does mosquito spraying actually work?
It targets the adults: the treatment goes on the shrubs and shaded spots where mosquitoes land and rest. It doesn't reach the water they breed in, so we pair it with getting rid of standing water, which Ontario's Ministry of Health calls a relatively simple and effective way to manage young mosquitoes. No yard treatment stops every mosquito, and we don't promise a yard without them.
How long do we need to stay off the yard after a treatment?
Your technician will tell you when people and pets can go back on the treated areas, following the label of the product used. Ontario also requires a sign at the edge of a treated residential yard, posted just before the treatment and left up for at least 48 hours after it.
Can I book one treatment for a party or wedding?
Yes. You can book a one-time treatment before an event, or a seasonal program. Mosquito control is also part of the Platinum Protection plan.
Is mosquito spraying allowed under Ontario's pesticide ban?
Yes. Ontario's cosmetic pesticide ban doesn't apply to uses that promote public health or safety, and the regulation counts controlling animals that bite or carry disease, naming wasps, mosquitoes and ticks. We apply it as licensed exterminators, using products with a PCP number on the label, as the label directs.
Can a yard treatment protect us from mosquito-borne disease?
No yard treatment can promise that. Our treatment controls mosquitoes, which may carry West Nile virus, and checking mosquitoes for the virus is public health work: Toronto Public Health and Peel Public Health both run trapping programs. To cut down on bites, Ontario advises covering up between dusk and dawn, when most mosquitoes feed, and Toronto Public Health recommends light-coloured clothing, long pants, long sleeves and window and door screens without holes. Health Canada's repellent guidance covers DEET and icaridin, with age limits for young children.
