Treat the Perimeter
Earwigs are outdoor insects that come inside by accident, so the work is mostly exterior. We treat the foundation perimeter and the ground-level band where they travel.

Mulch beds against the foundation, damp leaf debris, ground cover and boards on soil all hold the moisture earwigs need. We identify which of these are feeding the problem and what changing them would achieve.
Seal at Grade
Entry points at grade level — door sweeps, basement window wells, gaps where siding meets foundation — are where they actually get in, and sealing them matters more than interior treatment.
How to Identify Earwigs
Earwigs are reddish-brown insects easily identified by the pincers (cerci) at the tip of their abdomen. They're nocturnal and hide during the day in tight, moist spaces — under mulch, in door and window frames, or beneath potted plants.
Seasonal Behaviour in Ontario
Earwig numbers peak in late summer as populations that bred in moist soil through spring reach maturity, then migrate toward structures seeking shelter as outdoor conditions dry out or cool. A single wet season can produce a noticeable jump in fall activity.

Earwig Control — Questions We Get
When is earwig season in Ontario?
They become active in spring and peak through the warm, humid stretch of mid to late summer, which is when most indoor sightings happen. Numbers climb after wet weather, because damp ground conditions are what they need. Activity drops off sharply once nights turn cold in autumn.
Do earwigs actually go in your ears?
No. It is an old folk belief with no basis — earwigs have no interest in ears and do not burrow into people. They also do not sting, and the pincers are used for defence and mating. They are a nuisance and can damage garden plants, but they are not a health risk.
