How to Identify Boxelder Bugs
Boxelder bugs are black with distinctive red-orange markings along the edges of their wings, roughly 12mm long. They're harmless — they don't bite or damage structures — but appear in large, conspicuous clusters on sun-warmed exterior walls.
Seasonal Behaviour in Ontario
Boxelder bugs feed on boxelder, maple, and ash trees through summer, then aggregate on warm, sun-exposed walls in early fall looking for a way to overwinter indoors. Once inside a wall void, they stay largely dormant until a warm day draws them into living spaces, sometimes as late as February or March.

A handful of boxelder bugs on an exterior wall in fall is normal and doesn't need treatment. Large aggregations before winter, or bugs appearing indoors in numbers, are best addressed with an exterior perimeter treatment applied before the fall aggregation begins — once they're inside a wall void, options narrow considerably.

When should boxelder bugs be treated?
Early autumn, before the first hard frost and before they move indoors. Once they are overwintering inside wall voids they are largely out of reach, and they will keep emerging on warm winter days regardless of what is applied inside. Timing matters more with this pest than with almost any other.
Do boxelder bugs damage the house?
No. They do not bite, do not breed indoors, and do not damage structure, fabric or food. They are a nuisance pest — the issue is the sheer number that can gather on a sunny wall and then appear indoors through the winter. Crushing them can leave a stain, so vacuuming is better.
