Identify the Type

Beetle larvae do the damage, and they develop inside a specific material — a wool rug, a forgotten bag of grain, an accumulation of lint and hair under furniture. Finding and removing it is most of the job.

How to Identify Beetles
Carpet beetles are small, mottled oval beetles whose larvae, not the adults, damage wool, fur, and stored fabric; their shed larval skins are a common sign. Wood-boring beetles leave small, round exit holes in untreated or damaged wood, sometimes with fine sawdust-like frass beneath.
Seasonal Behaviour in Ontario
Carpet beetle larvae feed in the same undisturbed, dark locations as clothing moth larvae and are frequently found together. Adult beetles are often first noticed near windows in spring, having emerged from larval feeding sites to seek mates and lay eggs, which is when a hidden problem often becomes visible.

Beetle Control — Questions We Get
Are carpet beetles the same problem as clothes moths?
Different insect, similar damage. Both feed on natural fibres as larvae, so wool, silk and fur are at risk from either. Carpet beetle damage tends to be more irregular and grazed across a surface, while clothes moths leave more defined holes and often visible webbing. Treatment differs, so identifying which you have matters.
Where do carpet beetles actually breed?
In undisturbed accumulations of natural material — under and behind furniture, along carpet edges, in floor vents, inside wall voids where lint and pet hair collect, and in stored wool or fur. They frequently come in from outside on cut flowers or through windows, then find a quiet food source indoors.
