Wasp Nest Removal in Milton
In Milton's newer neighbourhoods, such as Dempsey, Harrison (also called Hawthorne Village South), Willmott and Ford, soffits, fascia and deck framing give yellowjackets and paper wasps sheltered places to build. Colonies grow through the summer and are largest in late August and September, when the colony needs less protein for its young and workers go looking for sweet food, which is why they show up at patios and garbage bins. Nests turn up under soffits, inside wall voids, beneath decks and underground along fence lines. A small paper wasp nest somewhere out of the way can often be left alone until the colony dies off at the first hard frost. A yellowjacket nest inside a wall void, or any nest near a door, needs equipment that reaches the colony rather than the surface.
Keeping Mice Out of Milton's Newer Homes
A newer house is not pest-proof. Homes settle over their first few years, opening small gaps around utility lines, garage door frames and where siding meets the foundation, and Health Canada notes that mice can squeeze through a crack the size of a dime. Deer mice may also move into buildings near fields and woodland in the fall. Fresh mulch and young plantings tight against the foundation keep the soil damp, and earwigs hide in damp, sheltered spots, so it helps to pull mulch and debris back from the walls. None of this means the house was built badly. A newer home in Coates or Ford just needs its gaps sealed before October, the same as a century home in Old Milton.
Ant Control in Milton
Carpenter ants and pavement ants both get into Milton homes, and they need different treatments. Carpenter ant workers are large, roughly 6 to 12 millimetres, and dark brownish-black, some with a reddish-brown upper body. They don't eat wood. They dig nests in damp or decaying wood and push out sawdust-like shavings, and the main colony is often outdoors in a nearby tree, log or woodpile. Pavement ants are smaller, nesting in lawns and under walkways, driveways and slabs, then foraging indoors along a steady trail. For both, surface spray is the wrong tool: it kills the ants you can see but not the colony, which is why the trail comes back. Bait placed on the trail the ants are actually using gets carried back to feed the nest, and Health Canada warns that spraying while bait is out stops it from working.
Animal Control in Milton: Raccoons, Squirrels, Skunks and Bats
The Town of Milton's Animal Services comes out, for a fee, to sick, injured or dead wildlife on private property, but not to healthy animals. A healthy raccoon in the attic, squirrels in the soffit, a skunk under the deck or bats in the roof are the owner's to deal with, and Ontario lets them hire a wildlife removal business. A licensed trapper on our staff live-traps raccoons and releases them within 24 hours, close to where they were caught (the province's rules say within 1 km), and only on land whose owner agrees. A sick, injured or orphaned animal goes to an authorized wildlife rehabilitator instead. From March to July there may be young inside, so we check before a trap goes in. Squirrels and skunks leave through a one-way door where one works, or are live-trapped the same way. Bats leave only through one-way doors, from April to early May or from mid-September to the end of November. Then every way back in is sealed.
