Moving Outdoors: How Warming Trends Are Inviting New Ants to Ontario

Ontario's ant fauna is changing. Species that were historically confined to the northeastern United States are appearing with increasing regularity across southern Ontario as average temperatures rise and the window of annual cold shortens. For homeowners and pest professionals alike, this shift requires updated identification skills and, in some cases, updated treatment approaches.

The odorous house ant (Tapinoma sessile), once a minor presence in Ontario, has become one of the most common indoor ant species in the GTA. Named for the coconut-like odour released when crushed, these small dark ants form massive, multi-queen colonies that are notoriously difficult to eliminate with barrier sprays. They require targeted bait strategies — and patience, as elimination of a large colony can take several weeks.

Pavement ants remain the most common species overall, but larger and more aggressive species such as the European fire ant (Myrmica rubra) have established populations in parts of southern Ontario and are creating challenges in gardens, parks, and residential properties near green spaces. European fire ants sting repeatedly and can displace native species, making them a pest management priority where they're present.

Pharaoh ants, historically a pest of tropical climates, are now a persistent issue in multi-unit residential buildings and healthcare settings in Ontario. They require specialized treatment — conventional insecticides cause colony budding, splitting one large colony into many smaller ones and making the problem dramatically worse.

The common thread across all of these species is that effective control requires correct identification first. An ant that looks like a nuisance is often the visible tip of a complex colony structure that needs to be understood before it can be addressed.
