Protecting Our Pollinators While Managing Summer Wasps

Stinging insects generate more calls to pest control companies in Ontario than almost any other category — and with good reason. A wasp nest near a doorway, under a deck, or inside a wall void is a genuine safety risk, particularly for households with members who have venom allergies. But not all stinging insects are wasps, and the distinction matters for how they should be managed.

Honeybees and native bees — bumblebees, mason bees, and sweat bees among them — are pollinators that are facing significant population pressures and are ecologically critical. They are generally non-aggressive and will not sting unless the nest is directly threatened. When a honeybee swarm establishes in a wall or structure, the ideal response involves contacting a local beekeeper for removal rather than extermination — the colony can often be safely relocated.

Yellowjackets, paper wasps, and bald-faced hornets are the species that generate most pest control calls, and for good reason. Yellowjackets in particular are highly defensive of their nests, can sting multiple times, and are responsible for the majority of serious venom reactions. They nest underground, in wall voids, in eaves, and in attic spaces. Unlike honeybees, they gain nothing from avoiding conflict when they perceive a threat.

Correct identification before treatment allows for an appropriate and proportionate response. A nest that turns out to be a paper wasp colony in an out-of-the-way corner of a garage might require nothing more than a seasonal wait and sealing after colony death in late fall. A yellowjacket nest in the wall beside a doorway requires prompt professional treatment.

At Sting Out, we identify the species before recommending any intervention. Where non-stinging beneficial insects are involved, we advise accordingly. Where treatment is needed, we use methods appropriate to the species and location — ensuring the nest is fully neutralized and that the structure is sealed to prevent re-establishment the following season.
